REGATTA REVIEW:

  1. We had 26 sailors, including 19 Optimists, at the 19th annual Jim Pique Memorial Regatta last Saturday. Optis had 10 races while the Portsmouth Division had nine, and thus, there was a throw-out. Early morning fog as well as chilly and shifty northerly breezes created a challenge for the sailors over the triangular course on Roberts Bay.
  2. The Opti class started together, but the Green Fleet sailors were scored separately.
  3. Both Optimist divisions had ties. Madeline won the Green Fleet tie breaker over Robbie when she grabbed a fourth in the fourth race although Robbie had two fifths. In the RWB, Garrett took third by tallying a second in the eighth and 10th races. Stefan had three thirds.
  4. This was the last Optimist regatta for Abbie and Truett Whitehead who age out of the class at the end of this month. Alexis, who also ages out, has already moved up to the Portsmoth Division and sailed her Laser Radial to sixth place, including a second in her eighth race.
  5. Lucas has another year of Opti eligibility because it was his 14th birthday last Saturday. His teammates sang “Happy Birthday” to him twice – once at the skippers’ meeting and the other time during the lunch break. Lunch was provided by Chef Sylvia Turner and other key members of the Venice Women’s Sailing Squadron, also known as the Bitter Ends.
  6. Bitter Ends Capt. Wendy Murray and long time member Sara Yunker presented the regatta trophies along with awards from our Fall Series. Mrs. Yunker, who knew Mr. Pique for years, read a poem written by his daughter Ann-Ellen Akeley when he died in August, 1992. He would have been 91 last Saturday, and next year, Ms Akeley hopes to attend the regatta.
  7. Thanks go to Celeste Patete and Kati Burns who served as race committee in the morning and to Jon and Karen Frajerman who took over the duties in the afternoon.
