| Summer Sailing classes are offered in the morning or afternoon, starting June 2. Each session is limited to 12 students. Registration is in advance, by mail and on a first come basis. The class is open to students ages 9 through 14. Student must be 9 by May 1st, 2008 (Birth Year - 1999). Due to the size of the boats that we use for beginner sailors, we do have a student weight limit of less than 150 pounds to enroll in the classes. You may only register for one two week session. Please plan for your sailor to attend all of the sessions during the two weeks. Missing just one class can result in your sailor feeling behind or missing something important. Specific dates and times are on the REGISTRATION AND LIABILITY RELEASE FORM. Every student will need to submit an EMERGENCY MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM as well.
Each student should graduate with knowledge of basic sailing techniques, water safety and boat handling skills, seamanship, and some knots. Instructors will teach at the Pram Shed on the grounds of the VYC and the waters of Roberts Bay. All instructors will have small boat instructor’s certification from US Sailing and current CPR/First Aid certificates. Registered students and parent(s) or guardians are expected to attend a short orientation, even if your child is a repeat sailor, from 9 to 10 AM on the Saturday prior to your child’s first class. At that time, you will meet the instructors, see the facilities, watch a capsize demonstration, and have a chance to ask questions. If you are unable to attend your particular orientation, then make special arrangements to come at another time. No textbook is required but the Red Cross/US Sailing book "Start Sailing Right" may be helpful and copies, at $10.00 each, will be available at the orientation class. PLEASE NOTE: the first ORIENTATION DAY will be SATURDAY, MAY 31st, 2008. There is also an Advanced Sailing Class offered for those students who have an interest in perfecting their skills and learning racing techniques. Students are invited to enroll in this class after completion of the current year’s Beginning class. Although we are not accepting pre-registration for the advanced classes, the dates they are offered are indicated on the Registration Form. If you think your child might be interested in more instruction, please keep those dates open on their calendar. The cost is 210.00 dollars (US) for a two week session. There are no refunds after June 2nd. Please make checks payable to: Venice Youth Boating Association, Inc. or VYBA, Inc. Full payment needs to accompany registration in order to secure a place in your requested session. If an email address is provided, you will receive your confirmation of placement and additional information by email, if not, we will mail your confirmation materials. Scholarship applications are available upon request. If requesting a scholarship, please send a note asking for a form in addition to a $50.00 check to secure place. We will mail scholarship information to you. Venice Youth Boating Association, Inc. 1330 Tarpon Center Dr. Venice, FL 34285. Any questions please CONTACT: JABBO GORDON at (941) 468-1719. |
