TELLTALES 29 (May 28, 2008)

Seven sailors wound up going to the annual School's Out Regatta at Tampa's Davis Island Yacht Club last weekend. Stephan VerHulst came in eighth out of 43 Green fleeters with 62 points, only one point out of seventh. Other VYBA Green Fleet results were: Andrew Sosa, 18th, Garrett Lawlor, 21st, Zack Jordan, 24th and Ashlyn Weed, 39th. Cara Patete finished 21st and Alicia Muscato came in 28th place in the 38-boat RWB competition. Former VYBA sailors Ben Mohney and Katie Paolillo won the 420 class while Christi Frost took third in the Laser 4.7 division.

We have a busy Saturday coming up. Take a look at what is slated:

# 9 o'clock is the first parent orientation for our summer program.

# 10:15 is a training session for Sailing Counselors who will help this summer. Those who have signed up so far are Ashlyn Weed, Sami Tornese, Andrew Sosa, Alicia Muscato, Chloe Dietrich, Stephan VerHulst, Aubrey Khachetoorian, Cara Patete, Evan Dacey, Paul Kreider, Garrett Lawlor, Stefan Johnson and Evan Langer. Ashlyn will be the demonstrator for the parents' session.

# 1200 is a pizza party and boat reassignment for our newer boats. (We have heard from only three RWB sailors as to their boat preference. Others will keep their same boats.)

# 1300 is a time for preparing our older boats and sails for the summer program.

# 1500 is the annual Parents Race with our sailors serving as coaches. This will cause LOL.

On Monday, the summer 420 class will meet with Instructor Bryan White at the Higel Park because of the first day activities for our summer program at the Pram Shed. Hours will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Those signed up are Alicia, Andrew, Aubrey, Sami, Stephan, Ashlyn and Garrett and Paul. Don't forget to bring your lunch. Bryan will determine where you eat.

There are no regattas slated this summer, but we will have a summer series, starting June 7. All sailors (Optimists and Portsmouth) should plan on sailing from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a break for lunch. However, on days when we have parent orientation sessions, sailing will start at 10:15.

Results of the Spring Series are as follows. RWB Ð 1, Alicia Muscato, 13; 2, Chloe Dietrich, 19; 3, Evan Langer, 23; 4, Cara Patete, 25; 5, Marissa Phillips, 29. Green Ð 1, Stephan VerHulst, 9; 2, Zack Jordan, 23; 3, Garrett Lawlor, 25; 4, Jonathan James, 30; 5, Andrew Sosa, 30; 6, Sami Tornese, 33; 7, Stefan Johnson, 34; 8, Aubrey Khachetoorian, 44; 9, Ashlyn Weed, 45. Portsmouth Ð 1, Tyler Thorpe, 8; 2, Bryan White, 14; 3, Kyle D'Arcangelis, 15. There was no throw out for any of the fleets because there were not enough races run.

Correction: After double checking the David Swett Memorial Regatta results, Jabbo discovered that Aubrey came in fourth with 62 points, and Zack was fifth with 66. We had said there was a tie. Also Stefan had 96 points instead of 117. We apologize for the errors.

Our thanks go to Ellen Lawlor (Garrett's mother) who arranged for us to promote our summer program with a 'crawl' that goes across the bottom of the Weather Channel channel.

Thanks also go to Don DeNure of Nokomis who donated a blue rug with an anchor on it (which is at the Pram Shed entrance) and two big plastic storage containers (which were really needed).

Speaking of containers, this is the second warning to check the Lost and Found container.

VYBA's sincerest sympathy goes to Leslie Langer (Evan's mother) whose father died unexpectedly near Detroit, Mich., May 7. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

Jabbo will be in Jacksonville most of next week (June 1-6) conducting an instructor course.
