· MISCELLANEOUS

1. Andrew Sosa was the only Portsmouth skipper who came to sail last Saturday. Since there was no one else, we did not have a race. Cara Patete came to bring her boat back and helped Blake Waldron with the Opti fleet. While some of the Portsmouth sailors had excused absences, some did not. We cannot justify having a coach for two people.

2. The aforementioned Cara did go to the Leiter Cup competition and she did sail in spite of heavy air, but the wind was too much. She stuck it out and learned a lot, especially at the clinics. Winds were over 30 with the approach of Tropical Storm Bonnie and she flipped probably two dozen times each day. Most of the other girls weigh well over 100 pounds whereas Cara is about 88, soaking wet. She can give you some good advice on conditioning.

3. As an aside, Molly McKinney placed second and Christi Frost was 14th out of 45 registered sailors from all over the country. Both learned to sail with VYBA, but transferred to Sarasota.

4. Lucas Galarza and Nick Hernandez reportedly were attending the USODA National regatta in Virginia last weekend. We have not heard any results, but hope they did well.

5. VYBA sailors and coaches are featured on the cover of the August/September issue of “Currents”, which is the Venice Yacht Club’s news publication. There are many VYC activities planned for Labor Day weekend and proceeds from several will benefit VYBA. For example, there will be a dinner on Saturday night after racing in Sarasota. On Monday, there will be a cookout with Optimist races slated for 4 p.m., where the kids will coach the parents.

· WHAT IF QUESTIONS

1. If you capsize during any race in a regatta and you receive assistance from a coach or safety boat, you will be scored DNF (did not finish). Best procedure is to right your boat by yourself. Then bail and sail. Some boats may have passed you, but all is not lost.

2. If you are called over at the start, go back all the way until the race committee tells you that you are clear. Don’t argue with the race committee. You aren’t going to win. Just do it.
