· SERIES COMMENTS
1. Lucas Galarza grabbed first after five races last Saturday and vaulted into first place in the Optimist standings, past the absent Bogan Whitehead. This Saturday’s race will be the last of the summer series. Each skipper will be allowed to throw out his or her worst score.
2. Once again, Andrew Sosa was the only Portsmouth skipper who came to sail last Saturday. And since there was no one else, we did not have a race. We know that some sailors are on vacation, but we don’t understand why people who are here don’t have the courtesy to let us know they are not coming. We will change the Portsmouth scoring system in the Fall.
· REGATTA RESULTS
1. We were able finally to obtain the official results from the Optimist Nationals, which were in Deltaville, Va., July 17-24. There were three qualifying races to determine which of the four fleets (Gold, Silver, Bronze and Pearl) the competitors would race in. Lucas Galarza and Nick Hernandez were among the 262 skippers. Stephan VerHulst registered, but did not go.
2. Nick came in 34th out of 68 in the Silver Fleet and scored as high as an 11th in the six races. He was 104th overall and by finishing in the top half, Nick qualified for the team trials and that was his primary goal. As an aside, he had just returned from a trip to China.
3. Lucas was 12th out of 58 in the Pearl Fleet and had a ninth place finish in one race.
4. Michelle Thomas has won one regatta and placed in another while in New Jersey so far.
· MISCELLANEOUS
1. Some parents have asked about next year’s (2010-11) paperwork. We will send out a revised schedule, policy forms (which must be signed and returned) and an invoice by Aug. 15.
2. As you noticed on the schedule, Aug. 14 is boat assignment and be kind to your boat day. The Red, White and Blue boats have only one change, so far, but we will be assigning Optis 25 through 36 to our new Ernest Green Fleet sailors. Green Fleeters will change their sails and all skippers (Optis and Portsmouth) should plan on washing their boats thoroughly.
