· REGATTA RESULTS: Nick Hernandez and Stephan VerHulst attended USODA’s Gulf Coast Championship Regatta in Pensacola on July 2-4. There were 45 registered skippers in one Optimist fleet that had six races. Nick tallied a 35-22-18-19-28-8, threw out the 35 and finished with 95 points for 21st place. He was one point out of 20th. Stephan scored a 27-25-12-22-30 and a 46 for being OCS in the last race. He tossed the OCS and had 116 points, good for 25th.

· OTHER RESULTS: Cara Patete and Sami Tornese won the distaff division of the Venice Yacht Club’s annual cardboard box race last Sunday. The pair placed second overall, losing to the USS Dylan, manned by two young guys. Our young ladies earned an “A” for effort and style points.

· VYC RACES: Last Saturday, we ran more than the usual number of summer series races and held them in the mooring field, just east of Higel Park as part of the VYC’s holiday festivities. Winners in each fleet (Lucas Galarza and Chloe Dietrich) will receive a sweat shirt and second place skippers (Bogan Whitehead and Cara Patete) will collect a T-shirt this coming Saturday. As a heads up, there will be some more special VYC Optimist races on Monday afternoon, Sept. 6, the day after Sarasota’s 63rd annual Labor Day Regatta. This will be primarily for adults, especially our sailors’ parents, but our skippers who are not too tired are invited to participate.

· MISCELLANEOUS

1. Our thanks go to Joe and Janet Staudenmayer who donated four white chairs to the Pram Shed. They also “contributed” four grandchildren to our summer program this year.

2. VYBA policy prohibits sailors from riding in a coach boat when they could be sailing. If your boat breaks, grab another boat and go sailing. Or you must call your parent(s) and go home.

3. That same policy also says that our sailors cannot be on VYBA premises without adult supervision. This is why you should not be hanging around the Pram Shed unless you intend to sail. You can’t come in early unless a parent is here to help you de-rig and stow your boat.

4. Sara Frajerman finished ninth in her age group in the Tae Kwon Do worlds held at Little Rock, Ark., recently. Then she placed second in her first competition in a new older group.
