· TWO ERRORS
1. First, last week’s newsletter should have been dated July 7, instead of June 7.
2. Secondly, John Light should have ranked sixth and Louisa Nordstrom seventh in the Optimist Fleet series standings last week. We left Louisa out and relegated John to seventh.
· REGATTA RESULTS: Sami Tornese, Ben Mohney and Jack Famiglietti won four out of seven races and captured the Area D regatta in the Sears, Bemis and Smythe national competition last weekend. The trio tossed its second place finish in the second race and garnered eight points to beat the team from St. Petersburg Yacht Club by four points in the four-boat battle. Sailing Flying Scots in light air on Lake Pontchartrain out of the Pontchartrain Yacht Club in Mandeville, La., the young sailors qualified for the national regatta It will be in San Diego, Calif., next month when they will race Lightnings. The group represented the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, but Sami belongs to VYBA and Ben, the skipper, lives in Venice and came up through our program. Their names will be engraved on a perpetual trophy and the youngsters agreed that they would each maintain it for a few months. When it is Sami’s turn to have the award, she will display it at our Pram Shed. A few years ago (I forget exactly how many), our own Fred Strammer (skipper), Charlotte Sims and Sarasota YSP’s Dalton Tebo combined efforts to win the national title at Burlington, Vt., on Lake Champlain. The Sears Cup is the national three-person award for youth.
· SAILING COUNSELORS: We had 17 sailors who wanted to be sailing counselors, but there are more blank spaces on the session sign-up sheets than there are signatures. If you want some community service hours and more time on the water, we invite you to register as helpers.
· MISCELLANEOUS
1. Major congratulations go to Blake Waldron who recently acquired his master’s license with a towing endorsement through the Coast Guard. That is a huge accomplishment. Well done.
2. Garrett Lawlor, with a little help from his father, Tom, detailed our three Whalers last week.
3. There will no “Tell Tales” next week because your scribe will be in Asheville, N.C.
