·        HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Paul Kreider, a Portsmouth Division sailor, who will turn 16 on Sunday.

·        SCHEDULE COMMENTS:

1.      The skippers’ meeting for the Leukemia Cup will be at the Isles Yacht Club’s pool deck on Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. We will launch from the Charlotte Harbor Sailing Center on Retta Esplanade at Berry Street (next to the Punta Gorda Boat Club, same as last year) as soon thereafter as possible. The first of five races is slated to start at 10 a.m. A pool party and awards ceremony back the pool deck is slated for 4 p.m. As an aside, some folks went to the regatta listing instead of the small boat races on the IYC’s website. The regatta is Mar. 26-28 and is for bigger boats. The small boat racing is this Saturday only.

2.      Some of you have been slow to sign up for these regattas. It’s first come, first serve for spots on the trailer. We also need to know so we can determine how many coaches to send.

a)      We have 11 Optimists and no Lasers signed up for Sailfest. Our deadline was Mar. 13.

b)      There are 11 Optimists and three Lasers signed up for the Jabbo Gordon Regatta. You can register on-line for the first time this year, thanks to Sheila Sosa. Please do so.

c)      Only three Optimists have signed up the Mount Dora Regatta. Deadline is Mar. 27.

2.      Red, White and Blue Fleet: 1, Stephan VerHulst, 6.7; 2, Lucas Galarza, 6.7; 3, Garrett Lawlor, 9; 4, Stefan Johnson, 16; 5, Samantha Wood, 16; 6, Scott Trecartin, 22; 7, Alex Soodak, 25.

3.      Portsmouth Division: 1, Chloe Dietrich, 2; 2, Andrew Sosa, 4; 3 (five tied with eight points).

·        REGATTA RESULTS:  Lucas Galarza came in 17th out of 39 entries in the Red, White and Blue division of the Spring Opti-Fest at Jensen Beach last weekend. Stephan VerHulst had rigging difficulties the first day and came in 32nd.  Former member There were nine races.

·        MISCELLANEOUS:

1.      Our thanks go to Bob Piel, Venice Yacht Club rear commodore, and his wife, Beth, who presented the winter series trophies last Saturday. It was a special occasion for our sailors.

2.      Kevin Jenkins, that would be Alexis’ father, has graciously volunteered to take over maintenance of all our trailers – the 12-boat, 9-boat and three Whaler trailers. Thank you.

3.      Evan Dietrich has dropped out of Green Fleet to concentrate on his soccer commitment.
