TELL TALES (Jan. 30, 2010)

COMMENT: I lied. After writing in the Jan. 27 issue that “Tell Tales” would miss a week, I decided to go ahead and update the schedule and the series standings plus make some other comments.

SCHEDULE:

Feb. 6 – Winter Series, race 8 (6-7, Valentine’s Regatta, St. Petersburg)

Feb. 13 – Winter Series, race 9

Feb. 15 – Optional sailing (1000 to 1500) Presidents’ Day

Feb. 20 – Spring Series, race 1

Feb. 27 – Spring Series, race 2 (hs, SP6. Jensen Beach)

Mar. 6 – Spring Series, race 3 (Allison Jolly Regatta, for females only, St. Petersburg)

SCHEDULE COMMENTS

1.      We wound up with 11 signed up for the Valentine’s Regatta in St. Petersburg next weekend. However, there will be sailing here, including series races, on Feb. 6, as usual. Blake Waldron will be in charge and Alex Whalen will be assisting. John Thomas will be at the regatta.

2.      Only two have signed up for optional sailing on Monday, Feb. 15. We need four more.

3.      We have the necessary four to send our young ladies to the Allison Jolly Regatta, but if anymore care to join the group, especially from the Portsmouth Division Divas, feel free.

MISCELLANEOUS

1.      Dr. Gene Erquiaga, Blake’s father, alertly caught my typo on the spelling of lacrosse. Thanks.

2.      Our appreciation also goes to board member Mike Muscato for manufacturing six metal plates that we need for all the mast cup fittings and thwarts that have been breaking lately.

3.      We need a volunteer from among the parents to oversee our trailer maintenance. Dr. Doug Sims, Charlotte and Jackie’s father, used to do it as did Coach John Thomas. Please call us.

4.      VYBA sailors should not be protesting each other, even in our series races. If there is a legitimate complaint, tell a coach so it can be discussed at a review session. On the other hand, if commit a foul, do your turns and forget about it. That means: both of you drop it.

5.      Earlier today, one Green Fleet skipper thought it was time to head for the shed and took off. It almost cost him a first place but we called him back so he could sail in the final morning race. Then in the afternoon, five Portsmouth sailors decided to come in before the practice was over. The quintet received “did not starts” for three races. If that happens again, we will consider a more suitable penalty such as “disqualified from the entire seasonal series”.
