REGATTA RESULTS:

1.      VYBA is back. In spite of some starting situations, our skippers did very well at the 63rd annual Labor Day Regatta in Sarasota. We had 12 racing in the 62-boat Green Fleet (for first year competitors) and six of finished in the top 13. Others did quite well too.

2.      In the Green Fleet, Alexis Jenkins finished fourth, Bogan Whitehead was fifth and Justin Frow came in sixth. Officials went only eight places deep for trophies, but Brianna Trecartin was 10th, Truett Whitehead was 11th and Louisa Nordstrom took 13th. Truett won the first race and Alexis captured the third race. Others were Nick Etz, 25th, John Light, 26th, Garver Whitehead, 29th, Courtney Purcell, 30th, Nick Hernandez 31st  and Jacob Hinshaw, 33rd.

3.      Bogan was leading the Green Fleet in points, but was over at the start of the fifth and final race. He had to come back behind the starting line before he could start chasing the others. He passed 40 boats and came in 22nd, which knocked him down to fifth overall.

4.      Stephan VerHulst was running in sixth place in the Blue Fleet, but was called for a black flag in a RWB race Sunday and that dropped him to 10th spot. Other VYBA Blue Fleet skippers were Garrett Lawlor, 19th Lucas Galarza, 25th , Stefan Johnson, 29th  and Scott Trecartin, 37th. Samantha Wood finished 22nd in the Red Fleet division.

5.      Out of the 78 boats in the overall RWB Fleet, Stephan was 27th, Garrett, 43rd, Lucas 52nd, Samantha 53rd, Stefan 57th and Scott 72nd. VYBA has no White Fleet skippers.

6.      Tyler Thorpe crewed for Ben Mohney and took third in the 14-boat 420 class.

7.      Switching to Lasers, Cara Patete took seventh in the 12-boat 4.7 division while Sami Tornese was 9th and Carla Johnson was 10th.  Paul Kreider finished 20th in the 48-boat Radial class while Andrew Sosa was 38th, Chloe Dietrich was 41st and Evan Langer was 43rd.

ANNUAL DINNER: This event will be at the Venice Yacht Club on Saturday, Sep. 19, beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to a cookout, officials will present Summer Series and year-round trophies.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

1.      Since almost everyone was at the regatta, we did not have a series race and the standings remain the same. New standings will be posted next week after this Saturday’s races.

2.      Charlotte Sims Perez, who headed our summer program in 2008, is the proud mother of a baby boy, Matthew Douglas Perez, who arrived at Lakewood Ranch Hospital at 8:22 a.m. on Sep. 5, weighing six pounds and 15 ounces and measuring 20 and three-quarters inches. Mother and son are doing well and we have reserved a spot for him in the summer of 2018.

3.      A bundle of items from the Lost and Found box went to the Goodwill store on Sep. 3, as promised. The next donation is slated for Oct. 1. Warning: keep track of your gear.
