TELL TALES (Sep. 16, 2009)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Alexis Jenkins, a top Green Fleet skipper, will turn 14 next Monday.

SCHEDULE:

Sep. 19 – Fall Series race 5 and annual dinner (Cressy High School Regatta in Clearwater)

Sep. 26 – Fall Series race 6 and high school regatta (SP 1) at Tampa’s Davis Island Yacht Club.

Oct. 3 – Fall Series race 7 (high school Great Oaks in St. Petersburg)

Oct. 10 – Crow’s Nest Regatta (all day) and boat load

Oct. 17-18 – River Romp Regatta (Junior Olympics event), Edison Sailing Center, Fort Myers

Oct. 24 – Fall Series race 8 and high school regatta (SP 2) at Lake Eustis

SCHEDULE COMMENTS: As our own Sheila Sosa knows all too well, there are many events conflict each weekend. She is in charge of the Florida Sailing Association youth sailing calendar and there are many weekends when there is more than one event scheduled. After all, there are only 52 weeks in a year. It is the same with our little grass roots program and we have a conflict on Oct. 10 with the Crow’s Nest Regatta, the Pine View Fair and a SAT exam. Frankly, with other regattas slated there is no place else to put the annual Crow’s Nest event. Thus, Pine View students will have to choose where their priorities are. We hope they will select the regatta.

RESERVATIONS NEEDED: If you intend to attend VYBA’s annual dinner at the Venice Yacht Club on Saturday (beginning at 6 p.m.), you need to let us know pronto how many will be in your party. Sailors are free, but relatives and friends are $10 each. You can pay at the door, if you don’t mind waiting in line, but we need to give Chef Marc an idea of how many we will have. John Jepsen, VYC commodore, will present the summer series trophies along with five special year-round trophies including the coveted Schroeder Sportsmanship and Louise Swift awards.
