TELL TALES (July 15, 2009)

Again, we apologize, but for future reference, Andrew Sosa (VYBA webmaster) posts each issue of our newsletter within three days. ·        MEMBERS RESIGN: Two VYBA board members – Penny Washburn and Lucille Kreider – have resigned. Elin Larsen, another member of the Bitter Ends, may replace Penny.

·        SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS: The Bitter Ends have graciously donated $210 to VYBA. The money is designated for scholarships to our summer learn to sail program. Thank you very much.

·        RATES RISE: Our board has increased some rates for the coming year. The year-round program will go from $495 to $550. Rack rental will increase $10 a month to $100 for outside and $110 inside. Non VYBA or VWSS (Bitter Ends) rates will be $200. That includes kayaks and dinghies.

·        FUND RAISING: The VYBA has decided to form a fund raising committee to help out with expenses because some grant money that we used to receive, will not coming to us this year. To date, no chairman has been named. If anyone is interested in helping, please contact the board.

·        SCHEDULE APPROVED: The board approved the 2009-10 schedule, but has not set a date for the annual dinner, which has been in August or September previous years. Our Jim Pique Memorial Regatta is being moved from September to Dec. 12, when it used to be scheduled. The Fall Series will begin Aug. 15 and Sarasota’s Labor Day Regatta is set for Sep. 5-6.

·        NEW RACKS: Tom Thompson of the VYC maintenance team built a set of racks in the back of the Pram Shed for our Laser spars. This will keep the spars off the floor and out of the way.

·        TYLER THORPE: Laser skipper Tyler Thorpe has been working around the Pram Shed, cleaning areas, organizing equipment and repairing gear. Thus, he has been earning community service hours to meet a Venice High requirement. He was going through the box of sweat shirts when he found $40 left over from the Thanksgiving Regatta. He dutifully turned it in, adding, “Honesty is the best policy.” Sweat shirts are available for $20 and would make great Christmas presents.
