SUMMER SAILING CLASSES

SUMMER SAILING SESSIONS

The Venice Youth Boating Association has five summer sailing sessions that begin on Monday, June 7, 2010 and end on Friday, Aug. 13. Other sessions begin June 21, July 5, July 19 and Aug. 2.

Each session runs Monday through Friday for two weeks. Sailors may sign up for either morning classes  (9 a.m. to 12  noon), or afternoon sessions (1 to 4 p.m.). Thus, campers receive a total of 30 hours of comprehensive sailing instruction.

You may register for only one session and registration is in advance, by mail and on a first come basis. However, you may want to list a second choice in case your first selection is full by the time your registration arrives. Each session is limited to 12 youngsters. This is how many boats are  available.

The program is held in the Pram Shed, which is on the grounds of the Venice Yacht Club, and on the waters of Roberts Bay and Dona Bay. Each student will learn basic sailing techniques, water safety, seamanship and knots.

All instructors are US Sailing certified and hold current CPR/First Aid cards.

Classes are open to students ages 9 through 14, but they must be nine years of age by Sept. 1 (birth year – 2001).

Youngsters must know how to swim and a swim check is given the first day in the VYC pool.

The cost is $210 for a two week session. This is the same as the past two  years, but there are no refunds after June 7. Checks should be made payable to Venice Youth Boating Association, or simply VYBA. Full payment needs to accompany the registration and liability form as well as the emergency medical form.

Scholarships are available and to request one, submit a request and a $50 check along with the regular forms to secure a spot. Information and a scholarship form will be mailed to you.

Two two-week advance sailing sessions are offered to those sailors who have an interest in perfecting their skills and learning race techniques. Although we are not accepting advance registration for those classes, they will be from 1 to 5 p.m. (four hours), beginning July 5 or Aug. 2. The cost is the same.

Parents may want to schedule a beginning session so their sailor can take it and the advance class in a four-week block or allow for a break in between. The first advance session is usually more open.

The procedure is: 1) print the registration and liability form as well as the emergency medical form, 2) fill them out completely, 3) mail them along with your check to Venice Youth Boating Association, Inc., 1330 Tarpon Center Dr., Venice, Fla. 34285 . If you have any questions, contact  Jabbo Gordon at 468-1719 or atveniceyouthboating@verizon.net. We do not offer on-line registration.

Registered students and parent(s) or guardians are expected to attend a short orientation, even if your child is a repeat sailor, from 9 to 10 a.m. on the Saturday prior to your child’s first class. For example, if your student’s class begins on June 7, you must come on June 5 to meet the instructors, see the facilities, watch a capsize demonstration and ask any questions you may have.

If your sailor is scheduled for later in the summer, parents parents come to an earlier orientation. US Sailing’s textbook, “Start Sailing Right”, is not required but is available at $10 a copy, which is VYBA’s cost.
