Regatta Results:

VYBA Presidents Day Regatta:

  • Green Fleet: 1st Joseph, 2nd Garver, 3rd Sam, 4th Carol, and 5th Sean.
  • RWB Fleet: 1st Louisa, 2nd Garrett, 3rd Tessa, 4th Stefan, and 5th Sara. It was nice to see Louisa back at our club for the day; we miss her smiling face when she is not here.
  • Laser Fleet: 1st Justin, 2nd Lucas, 3rd Courtney and 4th Bogan. Lucas and Courtney tied for 2nd Lucas won the tie breaker.

Videos from the Laser Beach launch:

Results for the Orange Bowl Regatta in Miami:

  • Louisa Nordstrom and former member Nick Hernandez both attended with Team FOR. A total 0f 559 sailors from 15 countries sailed for 4 days in Opti, Laser and 420s. Louisa did very well and finished 37th of 206 sailors over all in RWB. (25th in Red fleet) Nick Hernandez was placed 2nd before the last day with a good chance to take the title, but unfortunately the very shifty winds in the last 2 races did not blow his way and he finished 9th overall. However, this is an exceptional accomplishment by Nick since many of the world’s best Opti sailors were in attendance. Congratulations to both on their great sailing.

Results from USODA South East Championships – Qualifier for US Team Trials Spring 2012:

  • Total of 243 Sailors competed in this event which was held on Marco Island – Beach launch and racing took place in Gulf of Mexico about 1.5/2.0 miles offshore. Of note: the hotel constructed a very unique and special “Opti Wash” station that was a huge hit among the sailors

  • Conditions were very rough and gusty on Saturday, with many sailors retiring during the day. One boy was knocked unconscious after being hit in the head with his boom - he was brought ashore and checked by paramedics and was deemed OK.
  • Competitors from around the country (California, Seattle, New York, New Jersey, Houston among many others) / world came with their games faces and heavy coaching staffs were present and directing their teams every morning and each evening – well into darkness.

All sailors improved with each day as they became accustomed to gulf sailing conditions –

  • Bogans Day 1= 87th, Day 2 = 70th, Day 3 = 71st
  • Louisa Day 1 = 212th, Day 2 = 180th, Day 3 = 137th
  • Tessa Day 1 = 216th, Day 2 = 216th, Day 3 = 228th

VYBA Comments:

  • Our thoughts and prayers go out to Scott Trecartin who is ill at this time; Scott is doing a little better but has a long recovery he is being monitored and he is improving which is great.
  • Valentine’s Day Regatta contact list: when dropping your sailor off for this and any future regattas you will need to fill out the contact sheet we will have posted on the trailer. We need a current phone number for whoever is responsible for the sailor each day. If a different person will be responsible each day of the regatta you must update the sheet. We will have a new sheet for each regatta. This is in case they call racing for the day, a sailor’s boat has problems or the sailor takes ill.
  • There will be NO LASER SAILING this Sat. in Venice Feb. 4th.

VYBA News:

  • Buccaneer Blast Regatta: There is a signup sheet in the Pram Shed for the Buccaneer Blast Regatta which will be on Jan. 28-29, 2012. Held in Key Largo. This is not a key regatta which means we need a majority from each fleet to sign up for that fleet and coach to go too. At this time a coach will not be attending however being Courtney is going her father will have his power boat there for laser sailors. There will be sailing at our club on that day also.
  • The Valentine’s Day Regatta held in St. Petersburg on Feb. 4-5 still needs one more Laser sailor to send a coach; RWB needs three more sailors to send a coach. Green fleet only had one sailor sign up so a coach will not go for Green. The deadline for signup to send a coach is Sat. 2/21. This is not a key regatta therefore there will be sailing at our club on the 4th.
  • Feb. 20th is our Presidents Day Regatta for our club; it is on a Monday.
  • Allison Jolly Regatta “Girls only”: March 10-11 in St. Petersburg. This is a great regatta; if it is at possible you should plan to attend. Signup sheet is now posted.
  • Scout Week: We are now taking registrations for Scout Week March 12th-16th, from 8:00a.m.-12:00p.m. The cost is only $100.00. If you know a boy scout or girl scout aged from 9-15 let them know this is a great way to introduce them to sailing. Quite a few sailors joined our program after participating in scout week.
  • Jabbo Gordon Regatta April 7: For those of you who do not know this is our regatta we host at Indian Mound Park in Englewood, it is a 1 day regatta with 80-100 sailors in attendance. With this being our regatta we will need your help in organizing and putting on this event, you will be asked to help with registrations, handing out lunches and we will also ask for you to try to get sponsors for our T-shirts. We will be having a committee for this event. As soon as a date is set I will send out an email to inform you.
  • T-Shirt design contest for the Jabbo Gordon Regatta!! Calling for all sailors to enter a design for the shirts for the regatta. Last year the shirt was designed by Abbie Lomason. The design can have 3 colors and should fit on a sheet of 8.5X11 inch paper. I will have design packets ready for you Sat. Or you can draw and color it on a sheet of printer paper. All entries due by 17th.
  • 60th Year Celebration for VYBA: A 60th year celebration for VYBA is in the planning. It will be held on March 10th beginning at 5:00p.m. at the VYC. I will pass along more information as it becomes available to me. They would like you to contribute an item for the silent auction being help the night of the event.

Previous VYBA Sailor Fred Strammer along with his teammate Zach Brown are on a campaign to go to the 2016 Olympics in Rio sailing the 49er class sailboat. Please visit his link below to read more about their experiences and donate if able to help support their effort.
